Web Lingo 101

Confused about web lingo? Interested in staying more involved in the design process? There are A LOT of code words in web design (no pun intended;)). When you have a general understanding of the jargon, you are more able to actively participate in the conversations. Let us break down some of the basics.

What is “hard-coding” and “the cost of a hard coded site”?

A site that falls into this category requires months of planning, research, consulting, database design and implementation, software development and integration, site quality assurance and testing. When you think “hard-coding,” you can also think “made from scratch,” literally. The price tag on this can range between $20,000-$100,000+.

What is bootstrap?

Bootstrap makes front-end web development faster and easier. It’s made for folks of all skill levels, devices of all shapes, and projects of all sizes.

What is WordPress?

A custom-built WordPress website means that the website is Custom designed and built so that it matches your branding needs! These websites are created with both functionality and design in mind, as you will receive both custom art design and the ability to manage and update all content, images, and text contained within the pages of your site (infinite number of pages possible). With a CMS capable website, your site will have endless possibilities.

What is a plugin? Are they free?

A plugin is a piece of software that acts as an add-on to a web browser and gives the browser additional functionality. Plugins can allow a web browser to display additional content it was not originally designed to display. Sometimes, plugins are free while others cost a few hundred dollars.

What is SEO, how does it work, when will my site be on the first page of Google?

Search engine optimization is a methodology of strategies, techniques and tactics used to increase the amount of visitors to a website by obtaining a high-ranking placement in the search results page of a search engine, including Google, Bing, Yahoo and others.

Why do you consider copyrighting to be a key “component of design”?

The goal of your designs is to reinforce the content on the page. There is a quote by Jeffrey Zeldman, “Content precedes design. Design in the absence of content is not design, it’s decoration.”

Do all sites need Maintenance?

Last, but not least, is maintenance. Generally, most sites require regular maintenance in terms of updates to the core software, updates to themes, and updates to plugins. These updates help your website perform at its best and keep it secure from the latest WordPress threats. Plus, you need backups if you want to ensure that your content will be safe in the event of a hosting disaster.

I’m worried about security.

Security problems can cost a ton of money. It’s difficult to gauge what the potential damages of an insecure or hacked website could be, but rest assured it’s much higher than you think. Malicious intruders can make off with your personal information, your visitors information, and turn your digital world upside down.
